“Step Into the Strange: Inside Louisiana’s Mystery House That Time Forgot”

“Step Into the Strange: Inside Louisiana’s
Mystery House That Time Forgot”

by Rolando Barrero

There are places you visit… and then there are places that completely pull you into their own world. The Abita Mystery House is one of those rare, delightfully bizarre stops that feels less like a museum and more like stepping inside someone’s wonderfully eccentric imagination.

From the moment I walked in, I knew this wasn’t going to be your typical roadside attraction. Every corner is packed—no, overflowing—with oddities, vintage treasures, handmade folk art, and the kind of curious objects that make you stop, laugh, and ask, “Wait… what am I looking at?”

There are entire walls dedicated to retro memorabilia, strange inventions, and collections so specific they border on obsession—in the best possible way. Old arcade machines, mini dioramas, bottle caps, license plates, and whimsical creations made from everyday junk all come together in a chaotic harmony that somehow makes perfect sense.

What I loved most was the sense of humor woven into everything. This place doesn’t take itself too seriously—and neither should you. It invites you to slow down, wander, and rediscover that childlike curiosity we often lose along the road.

As someone who’s been traveling the country documenting hidden gems, roadside attractions, and the stories in between, this stop felt like a perfect reflection of why I chose this life on the road. It’s not always about the big national parks or famous landmarks—it’s about these unexpected, offbeat places that stay with you long after you leave.

And in many ways, that spirit is exactly what inspired my book, Between Storms and Sunrises—a journey through back roads, small towns, and the emotional landscapes we travel along the way. This visit to Abita Springs felt like stepping into one of those pages: unpredictable, colorful, and full of stories waiting to be discovered.

If you find yourself anywhere near Louisiana, do yourself a favor—take the detour. Wander slowly. Look closely. Laugh often.

Because sometimes, the strangest places turn out to be the most unforgettable.

The Mystery House of Albita Springs, Louisiana!

If you are looking for things to do in New Orleans, the Abita Mystery House is less than an hour north in historic Abita Springs. This roadside attraction features a vintage service station, a 100yr old Louisiana Creole cottage, an exhibition hall of memorabilia and junk, and the much photographed House of Shards.

Come see handmade folk art animated scenes of Southern life by Louisiana inventor / artist, John Preble. With the help of over 50,000 found and recycled objects, Preble created his own fantastic worlds: there's a Mardi Gras parade, a New Orleans jazz funeral, a rhythm and blues dance hall, a haunted Southern plantation, and much more! This joint was built with concrete, glass, wood, water, vision, and invention. Bring a sense of humor and an open mind.

If you enjoy discovering places like this, you’ll feel right at home in my travel memoir series.
Between Storms and Sunrises is just the beginning.
