Hello everyone, Rolando Chang Barrero here! Welcome back to another edition of Travel with Rolando and Adventures with Bella. If you’re new here, it’s pretty simple: I drive, I take the pictures, and Bella—my amazing four-legged co-pilot—handles snack management and strategic napping. We traded city views for wide-open spaces and pointed the compass toward the high desert of Utah. Bella’s tail started thumping against the car door about fifty miles out; I think she smelled the adventure coming.

Day 1: Arrival in the Red Zone
@travelwithrolando Landed on Mars... or maybe just Arches National Park! 🪐🐕 Bella and I traded city views for the deep reds and burnt oranges of the Utah high desert. 🧡 While the trails aren't super dog-friendly, the main scenic drive is a 10/10 experience. Travel Tip: Hit The Windows Section at sunset. The rocks literally look like they are on fire! 🔥 Check out the full story on the blog! 👆. #nps #ArchesNationalPark #MoabUtah #TravelWithRolando #DogFriendlyTravel ♬ Sunrise - Official Sound Studio
Time: Late Afternoon

Wow. Just… wow. We just pulled into Moab and headed straight toward the park entrance. I’ve seen photos of Arches National Park my whole life, but reality is way better than Instagram.

It feels like we landed on Mars, but with better parking and a paved road. The colors here are insane—the deepest reds and burnt oranges against a sky so blue it almost looks fake. Bella was immediately suspicious of the giant rock formations. She spent the first twenty minutes growling softly at Balanced Rock, convinced it was going to tip over on us. I told her it’s been sitting there for eons, but she remains unconvinced.

The "Dog Rules" Reality Check: Okay, quick note for fellow pet travelers: National Parks are tough for dogs. Bella isn't allowed on the hiking trails to see the famous arches up close (too fragile, too hot, too many critters).

But, that didn't stop our fun! We turned the scenic drive into the world's greatest visual scavenger hunt. I’d spot an arch, pull into the viewpoint, and Bella would stick her nose out the window to aggressively sniff the high desert air while I snapped photos. We dubbed this the "Drive-By Awe Tour."

Time: Sunset Location: The Windows Section Viewpoint

This is the magic hour. As the sun started dropping, the rocks literally seemed to glow from the inside out. It looked like the landscape was on fire.

We parked near The Windows. Since we stuck to the paved areas, Bella got to hop out on her leash and stretch her legs. She was very interested in a lizard that scurried under a rock, and she ended up covered in fine, red dust from her paws to her belly. We call that "desert patina."

Sitting there on the bumper of the car, watching the light fade over those impossible stone doughnuts that defy gravity, was incredible. Bella leaned against my leg, watching the horizon. I think even she was impressed, though she was probably just looking for more lizards.

Day 2: The Morning After Time: 8:00 AM (Coffee time)

We are heading out of the park today to find some BLM land where Bella can properly run off-leash and chase things without getting yelled at by a ranger.

Final thoughts on Arches? It’s majestic, it’s massive, and it makes you feel very small in the best possible way. It’s a little tricky with a dog, but if you’re willing to do the scenic drives and stick to the viewpoints, it’s still an unforgettable road trip stop.

Time to shake the red dust off the floor mats and hit the road. Until next time!
